Our relationship with God is the most precious treasure we possess, for it is the heartbeat of our existence. As we walk through the seasons of life, learning to love Him more dearly becomes not only a call but also a response to the love He has already lavished upon us. Indeed, St. John in his first letter (1 John 4:19) beautifully reminds us of God’s initiative in love: “We love because He first loved us.” This verse emphasizes that our love for God and others is a response to the love God has already shown us. His love is the foundation of our love. Every breath we take, every step we make, is an expression of His love—a love so deep that our very being is a testament to His unending care. To live in this truth is to be embraced by divine love and to allow our hearts to bloom in response.
To love God more dearly means allowing our souls to be drawn into the depths of His heart, where we find the source of all love. His love is not fleeting or conditional; it is steadfast, eternal, and unfailing. The beauty of this love is that it calls us not just to receive but to give. We love because He first loved us, and in loving Him, we discover the joy of truly living.
Yet, love alone is not enough. Our love for God must be accompanied by faithfulness in prayer. Prayer is the language of the heart—a sacred dialogue between the Creator and the created. It is not a duty to be fulfilled but a delight to be savored. We pray because we long to speak with the One who knows us best, who listens without judgment and answers with wisdom. Just as we talk to those we love every day, so too must we converse with God. He is always there, waiting, listening, eager to hear our voice, no matter how broken or weary we may feel.
In prayer, we learn to trust. And what is trust but the quiet confidence of a child who places their hand in the hand of their parent, knowing they will be led safely through the unknown. God invites us to trust Him fully, not with hesitation or fear, but with the simplicity and innocence of a child. It is this kind of trust that moves mountains, that carries us through the storms of life, and that allows us to rest in the assurance that God is always with us, guiding and protecting us.
Trusting in God requires surrender—letting go of our need for control and allowing Him to take the lead. It is not always easy to trust, especially when the path ahead seems uncertain or filled with obstacles. But just as a child does not question the love of their parent, so too must we place our trust in the One who has loved us from the beginning. The prophet Isaiah says: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:8-9). These verses remind us of the vast difference between God’s wisdom and our own. God’s plans and purposes often transcend human understanding. While we may not always comprehend His ways, we are called to trust in His divine wisdom and guidance, knowing that He sees the bigger picture and works all things for good.
And so, we wait. We wait on Him with anticipation—not in frustration or impatience, but with hearts full of hope. We wait because we know that God’s timing is perfect, that His answers come not a moment too soon or too late. In the waiting, we are stretched and strengthened, our faith deepened, and our love refined.
As we journey through life, let us love Him more dearly, pray more faithfully, trust Him fully, and wait on Him with joyful anticipation. For in His hands, we are safe, loved, and held forever.
